Let’s start with an interesting statistic: 2.3 billion users are active on social media (As of 2016).

We’ve previously posted about how vital it is for a brand to have a social media presence, but without the right strategy and implementation, doing so can cause more harm than good!  We’ve listed a few common social media marketing mistakes you should not be making, so that you know what to avoid if you want a successful campaign.

1. Being That Annoying Salesperson All The Time

Let’s face it, we’ve all had a bad experience with a pushy sales person on Twitter before, right? You just simply cannot wait to walk away and forgot the whole ordeal. If you’re constantly trying to sell things on social media, with no desire to connect with your followers, you’ll see a huge lack of engagement and following.  Instead, providing your followers with a good mixture of engaging, entertaining, humorous and personal content, you add value toy our page and ensure that users have a reason to continue following you. Once you’ve shown you aren’t just a pushy salesperson you can being to build stronger customer relationships and as a result, whenever you do promote your product/service, you’ll find your audience more receptive and the leads will convert themselves.

Remember: A mixture of content, including both engaging and entertaining, mixed with your own sales material, is your best option.

2. Infrequent Content? No thanks

We see this quite frequently – a business will start off posting loads of content for a month or so but slowly fade away in the coming weeks. If you are wanting to build an audience on social media (and more importantly, not lose one!), it’s important to be consistent. No rules are set in stone here as with each social media platform the necessary number of posts will differ. For example, we find that running a Facebook page would consist of several, quality updates a week, whilst a twitter page needs to be more frequent ‘micro-blogs’, in multiple posts throughout the day. At DigitalDino’s, we develop a content planner that helps ensure we are planning our posts in advance for our social media, meaning we know exactly what to do and when to do it.

Remember: Planning ahead will help you remain consistent and you can worry less.

3. It’s All About Your Followers!

We simply cannot stress this enough. Sure, it’s great you want to let the world know about your brand and your business but it’s important to remember one thing: your followers. Beyond just posting content, your brand will have to converse with users in order to remain active and sustain that brand-awareness you’ve worked so hard for. According to research by Lithium Technologies, more than 70% of users expect to hear back from the brand they are interacting with on Twitter. It’s recommended to have a dedicated person/team/company on hand to manage this for you as it’s a difficult and time consuming job to do yourself – especially if you’re running your own business!

Remember: While posting great content at the right times and being consistent is important, it’s always about your followers. Keep active, keep in contact and keep on growing!
