3 Reasons Why You Need Twitter This General Election

The US Election taught us many things. It taught us that the world of politics can be a strange place. That unthinkable scenarios can become a reality, polls can be misguided and a nation can be divided. However, there’s one lesson to be learned above all others: If you didn’t have Twitter, you were missing out. Here’s our guide to making sure you don’t miss out again now its the UK’s turn to go to the ballots…

3. War Of Words

Ok, so it’s not quite Trump v Clinton. But while the chances of a May/Corbyn showdown on Twitter seem slim, there will be plenty of political figures expressing their opinions in 140 characters or less. Bullish journalists, such as The Guardian’s Owen Jones, will be debating the views of the left while broadcasters including Julia Hartley-Brewer will be airing their views from the right. If there’s one thing you should have learned from the American Election, it’s that Twitter is the place to be for all the debates. Celebrity involvement is a certainty, as is Piers Morgan airing his (often) controversial views. To make sure you don’t miss out, we’ve compiled a list of 10 accounts you simply must be following this election, to be posted soon (hint: Piers Morgan is one of them).

2. You’ll Be Up To Date On Everything

Literally everything. There’s no better place to stay up to date with the twists and turns of a general election than Twitter. The US Election proved that Twitter is the place to be for all your gossip and updates. Within minutes of it being announced, #GeneralElection was the top trending hashtag on the social media platform. Regular videos of speeches will appear, as well as images and statistics that will keep you informed of the latest happenings in the political world. Don’t forget, you can post content yourself if you’re passionate about the election and want to air your views to the public.

1. Twitter Will Help You Choose Which Way To Vote

Although it sounds a little bit extreme to say Twitter can define your political views, it’s not unrealistic to say that the social media platform will certainly have an impact if you’re unsure on which way to vote. For those who are undecided, make sure that you balance the accounts you’re following to avoid getting bogged down by views from one side of the race, allowing you to have an open mind and listen objectively to views from both sides. This way, you’ll be able to gauge the views you agree with the most, helping you to understand more about which party and policies you’re more favourable towards.

Twitter will be your source of all the polls & statistics. Here is a poll (via YouGov) taken on April 13th.
